Last spring I spent three weekends on the water with eight different fish finders clamped to my jon boat, kayak, and a buddy’s bass rig. I marked waypoints, scanned drop-offs, and pulled baits through every brush pile I could find. Out of all that testing, I pulled together this list of the best fish finders … Read more
I tested six portable fish finders over 90 days on lakes, rivers, and through the ice. The results surprised me. Some cheap handheld units outperformed premium brands in shallow water, while expensive CHIRP systems fell flat without proper transducer placement. Finding the best portable fish finders in means matching sonar technology to your fishing style. … Read more
I lost a Garmin GPSMAP 78 overboard during a charter trip in the Florida Keys last spring. The current took it before I could blink, and I watched a $300 device disappear into four feet of water. That was the day I started carrying a backup unit that actually floats. After that experience, our team … Read more
I remember my first kayak trip with the paddle that came bundled with my kayak. By the end of two hours, my shoulders were toast, my hands were blistered, and I swore I would never kayak again. That was until I upgraded to a proper fiberglass paddle, and everything changed. A quality paddle is the … Read more
Kayaking without a proper life jacket is a gamble I stopped taking years ago after a cold-water capsize off Lake Michigan. The right PFD (Personal Flotation Device) keeps your head above water, frees your arms for paddling, and stays out of the way of your kayak seat. The wrong one rides up, traps heat, and … Read more
I remember my first night trying to capture the Orion Nebula with nothing but a tripod and a DSLR. After 30 seconds of exposure, every star turned into a curved streak across my frame. That frustrating moment is exactly why I started hunting for the best equatorial mounts — gear that tracks the sky so … Read more
When I first started in astrophotography, I wasted an entire night trying to manually track the Orion Nebula with a wobbly alt-azimuth mount. My stars were egg-shaped, my frustration was real, and my photos went straight to the trash. That experience taught me the single most important lesson in this hobby: your mount matters more … Read more
I’ve spent the last three months testing ten of the best binocular harnesses on the market, carrying everything from compact 8x42s to chunky 12×56 ELs through backcountry hunts, prairie spot-and-stalk sessions, and weekend birding walks. The difference between a $20 strap and a $130 modular chest pack isn’t just price; it’s whether your neck aches … Read more
I learned the hard way that handheld rangefinders lie to you past 600 yards. On a late-season elk hunt in , I ranged a bull across a canyon at “742 yards” from my partner’s elbow. The bullet hit four feet low. The tripod mount I bought the next week added 200+ yards of honest range … Read more
I learned the hard way why bipods and tripods for spotting scopes matter. During a 60x digiscoping session on a windy ridge, my hands shook so badly I couldn’t tell a coyote from a coyote-shaped rock. That afternoon cost me a clean shot on a mule deer. So our team spent the past four months … Read more
