When buying a drone, many pilots overlook one aspect:
The drone’s range.
Range is extremely important.
If you want to get shots that are far away or in hard-to-reach areas, you need enough range (and flight time) to fly your drone to that area.
This guide reviews some of the top models on the market right now.
It will help you choose the best long range drone for sale in 2020 for your needs and budget.

Best Long Range Drones - Reviews
1. Best Overall - DJI Mavic 2 Pro
DJI really outdid themselves with the Mavic 2 Pro.
With its 20MP camera that shoots 4K video, this top tier quadcopter captures some of the best aerial images and videos available on a drone, making it heavily favored by professional pilots and recreational pilots who want high quality shots.
It comes with automatic collision-avoidance protection, a 31-minute flight time, and it can reach speeds of up to 44 mph for high-speed pans and chase scenes.
Not to mention, its long 8km range means you needn't worry about losing signal due to control distance issues.
The Mavic 2 Pro has 8MB of internal storage built in and can support SD memory up to 128GB of storage
With its light weight and foldable design, the Mavic 2 Pro is a godsend for traveling photographers and videographers. It's an excellent all-around quadcopter for both recreational and professional pilots.
Not to mention, this package comes with camera filters, extra props, a landing pad, external storage, and ton of other accessories to enhance your flights.
2. Best Budget Long Range Drone - DJI Mavic Mini
If you're looking for a quality budget option, the DJI Mavic Mini is your best bet.
This neat little quadcopter comes with a 4km range (around 2.5 miles), a 30-minute flight time, and a 2.7k video camera that takes 12 megapixel still photos. This gives it a nice combination of range, flight time, and camera quality.
Not to mention it weighs less than 250 grams and it folds down to roughly the length and width of a smartphone, making it incredibly portable.
It can be flown on your smartphone using the DJI app, and the Mavic Mini comes with some awesome autonomous "Quick Shot" modes, including Dronie (selfie mode), Circle, Helix, and Rocket for easy shots.
The Mavic Mini is one of my favorite overall options for many pilots, especially beginners and those looking for quality budget drone.
The DJI Phantom 4 Professional is one of the most technologically advanced drones manufactured so far.
It takes 20 megapixel still photos, shoots video in 4K resolution, and it has a whopping 7km range.
One of my favorite aspects of this quadcopter is its obstacle sensing and collision avoidance capability. You can fly the Phantom 4 thousands of meters away from you, around buildings, over trees, and it will automatically return back to you while avoiding all of those same obstacles on its own. It's truly a spectacular thing to witness.
The P4 Pro's 30-minute flight time is a huge benefit on long flight sessions. This gives you ample time to get all the shots you need before landing safely. If you're on a long shoot, just bring a couple extra batteries you'll be good to go.
My only concern is that the drone's size makes it more difficult to transport than a drone like the Mavic Pro or Mavic 2 Pro. If you're planning to travel with this drone, I'd strongly suggest buying a carrying case.
Overall, this drone flies well, the GPS gives you some great autopilot capability, and it has one of the longest flight ranges available on any drone.
4. Best Price-to-Features Ratio - DJI Mavic Pro
The Mavic Pro is DJI’s best release yet. This highly advanced quadcopter is an amazing feat of technology:
- It folds down to the size of a water bottle for easy transport
- It has an extremely long 7km control distance
- Mavic can fly at speeds up to 40mph
- It comes with smart features that give it autonomous flight capability
- The drone comes with a crisp 4K camera
- It can avoid obstacles automatically
- And much more
The DJI Mavic Pro isn’t only one of the best drones with a long range, it’s one of the best drones out there period.
5. Best Deal - DJI Phantom 4
Another fantastic drone from DJI is the Phantom 4.
As the price has come down with the release of the Phantom 4 Pro, this drone is now one of the best deals available. With a 7km flight distance, you get more than enough time in the air to get the shots you’re looking for.
It comes with a 4K camera, can take 12 megapixel still photos, and the quadcopter can avoid obstacles to help you minimize crashes.
The Phantom 4 has autonomous flight modes, so even novice videographers can get expert shots.
And its gimbal stabilization technology ensures those shots are smooth and eloquent.
6. Best For Traveling - DJI Mavic Air
The Mavic Air is an incredibly portable quadcopter that's perfect for traveling and getting high quality shots.
The drone folds down to the width and height of a smartphone, can take 32MP Sphere Panoramas, comes with immersive FPV (first person view), and it can shoot 4K video.
It also takes 12 megapixel still photos.
The portability of this drone makes it a great companion for adventurers, hikers, athletes, travelers, and more, and I love that this package comes with goggles to allow for a first-person-view experience.
With a 21-minute flight time, the Mavic Air packs a powerful punch..
7. Best Cheap Long Range Quadcopter - Hubsan H501S
This is one of my favorite quadcopters in the under $300 range. The Hubsan H501S has a 19 minute flight time, a 300m range, and it comes with powerful brushless motors for added power.
The camera shoots video in 1080p, and the drone comes with GPS hold, return to home, and follow me autonomous flight modes.
(The H501S is one of the cheapest drones with follow me mode. This gives the drone the ability to follow you and shoot video automatically.)
You can’t go wrong with this quadcopter as either an entry level pilot or someone who wants a cheap rig for aerial photography and videography.
How To Choose A Long Range Drone
Every drone has a few defining features:
- Flight time
- Camera quality
- Flight modes
While range is an important feature, it's sometimes a better decision to sacrifice a little range in order to get better camera quality or another feature that's important to you.
So when choosing a drone like this, I suggest defining a minimum range you want (for example, 1 kilometer) then making your decision based on the other specs/features you want.
Choosing a drone based solely on range is not a smart idea. You need to consider the other aspects that will affect your use of the drone.
Why Buy A Drone With A Long Control Distance?
Range is an extremely underrated feature. If your drone is constantly flying out of range, it will be a major headache waiting for it to return back to you.
Safety-wise, some drones do "fly aways" when out of range. This can be extremely dangerous because you've lost control of the drone and you don't know where it's flying. You're also risking losing your invest if it crashes and is irreparable.
I always encourage pilots, no matter the range of their drone, to consider a tracker to help protect their investment.
So buying a drone with a long enough control distance is super important.
Who Are These Drones Best For?
These drones are great for professional pilots and recreational pilots.
Most professional pilots need enough range to capture their shots without worrying about losing signal. Nothing is worse than getting the perfect shot only to have it ruined by going out of range.
Recreational pilots will also get a lot of value from these models. They're safer, and these drones tend to be higher quality than ones with shorter control distances (and they aren't always more expensive).
Which Drone Has The Longest Range?
The longest range drone I've seen is the DJI Mavic Air with an 10km control distance.
But, as I said before, it isn't wise to choose a drone simply because it has a longer range than another one. You need to consider all of the specs/features.
What Is The Best Drone With The Longest Range?
That’s it! These are some of the best drones with the longest range for sale in 2020.
