What’s the one thing every drone pilot can agree on?

A longer flight time is ALWAYS a good thing.

A long flight time allows you to enjoy flying without needing to recharge or switch batteries as often.

For aerial photography, you get more time in the air to capture the right shots. For inspections and other drone services, you have more time to get the job done.

A long flight time is also much safer, as there’s less chance of the battery life depleting and your drone plummeting to the ground.

Ouch!

On this note, I always suggest that pilots protect their investment with a drone tracking device, no matter what their drone’s flight time is. My go-to is Trackimo.

The drones in this comparison list are some of the best drones with the longest flight time for sale in 2021.

If you’re looking for a long flight time drone, this is the place to start.

Top Long Flight Time Drones - Reviews

1. Best Overall - DJI Mavic 2 Pro

Flight Time: 31 minutes

The highly anticipated DJI Mavic 2 Pro lived up to the hype. This foldable drone is an amazing feat of technology:

  • 18km control distance
  • Can fly at speeds up to 44 mph
  • Smart features for autonomous flight
  • 4K camera
  • Obstacle avoidance
  • And much more

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro comes with a high-quality camera that captures 20-megapixels images and 4K video. This makes it a favorite of professionals and hobbyists alike.

Its automatic, omnidirectional, collision-avoidance protection helps protect your investment from unwanted trees and buildings. And it comes with a 3-axis gimbal for stable shots.

The Mavic 2 Pro isn’t only one of the best long flight time drones. It’s one of the best drones period.

And this package comes with many of the accessories and add-ons a pilot could want.

Pros

  • Easy to transport
  • Great camera quality
  • Lots of flight modes
  • Obstacle avoidance
  • Great for many types of pilots
  • 31 minutes of battery life

Cons

  • Can't attach your own camera equipment

2. Best For Professionals - DJI Phantom 4 Pro

Flight time: 30 minutes

Another behemoth from DJI is the Phantom 4 Pro.

With a 30 minute flight time, you get more than enough time in the air to get the shots you’re looking for. It comes with a 4K camera that takes 20 megapixel photos, and it comes with an obstacle avoidance system to help you mitigate crashes.

The Phantom 4 has autonomous flight capability, so even if you aren’t a great videographer you can still get expert pans and shots. And its gimbal stabilization technology ensures those shots are smooth and eloquent.

One of the most powerful aspects of this quadcopter is its obstacle sensing and collision avoidance. You can fly the drone thousands of meters away, around buildings, over trees, and it will return back to you while avoiding all of those obstacles on its own. It's quite an amazing feat.

The only concern with this quadcopter is it's difficult to transport than a drone like the Mavic Pro. If you're planning to travel, I'd strongly suggest buying a carrying case.

Overall, this drone flies well and the GPS gives you some great autopilot capability.

Pros

  • Excellent camera quality
  • 30-minute flight time
  • DJI's autonomous flight modes
  • Collision avoidance
  • GPS-assisted flight

Cons

  • If you're going to travel with this drone, a carrying case is recommended

3. Best Portability For Traveling - DJI Mavic Air

Flight Time: 21 minutes

The DJI Mavic Air is one of my favorite overall drones.

It has a fantastic flight time of 21 minutes, comes with a 4K camera that shoots 12 megapixel still photos, and it folds down to the height and width of a smartphone.

While it isn't as compact as the Mavic Mini, it is incredibly easy to transport and travel with. And it comes packed with high-end technology to help you get beautiful shots on the road, on hikes, or on any adventure.

One of my favorite aspects is the FPV goggles included in this package. There is nothing so immersive in drone flying than an FPV experience, and to get it on such a compact drone is a blessing.

All in all, if you're looking for a high-tech portable little quadcopter, the Mavic Air is worth consideration.

Pros

  • Great 21-minute flight time
  • 4K video
  • 12MP stills
  • FPV flight
  • Folds down for easy transport
  • Autonomous flight
  • Smart capture
  • 32MP panoramas

Cons

  • Goggles connect using a USB cable.

4. Best Under $500 - DJI Mavic Mini

Flight Time: 30 minutes

The DJI Mavic Mini is a marvel in consumer drone innovation. Now we can all carry a flying camera in our pockets.

It weighs less than 250 grams, which is a huge contributing factor to its extra long flight time. It takes 12MP still photos and shoots crisp video in 2.7K.

The Mavic Mini also comes with some awesome autonomous "Quick Shot" modes, including Dronie (selfie mode), Circle, Helix, and Rocket. Simply select the mode and the drone will do the rest.

You can also fly this drone using your smartphone with the DJI Fly app. No need to carry around a bulky controller.

And to put the cherry on top, the Mavic Mini comes in at under $500.

My only gripe is that the DJI Fly app can be a drain on your phone's battery, so a portable phone charger is recommended.

Pros

  • Super compact
  • Under $500
  • Autonomous Quick Shot modes
  • 12MP still photos
  • 2.7K video
  • Weighs less than 250 grams
  • 30 minute flight time

Cons

  • The app can sometimes drain phone battery too quickly

5. Best Budget Long Flight Time Drone - Hubsan H501S

Flight Time: 19 minutes

This is one of my favorite quadcopters in the sub-$300 range. The Hubsan H501S has a 19 minute flight time and comes with powerful brushless motors.

The camera shoots video in 1080p with a control distance of 300 meters, and it comes with GPS hold, return to home, and follow me autonomous flight modes. The H501S is one of the cheapest drones with follow me mode (the drone can follow you and shoot video automatically).

For the price, you can’t go wrong with this quadcopter.

Pros

  • Great budget drone
  • Autonomous flight modes
  • 1080p video
  • 19-minute flight time
  • GPS hold
  • Durable

Cons

  • Landing gear is a bit short

Buying Guide

How To Choose A Long Flight Time Drone

Choosing a drone with a long flight time first depends on your purpose behind flying it.

Are you a budding professional pilot who wants to practice their skills? Are you a hobbyist who was to get solid aerial imagery? Are you a current professional pilot and you need a long flight time to produce better work for your clients?

Once you know your purpose behind flying it, you want to strike a balance between:

  • Flight time
  • Range
  • Price
  • Camera quality

These are the top features most pilots need to pay attention to. Choose a drone that has a long enough flight time and comes with the specs/features you need for your purposes.

How Can I Make My Drone Fly Longer?

To make your drone fly longer, here are some helpful tips:

  1. Take care of your batteries.
  2. Buy extra batteries for longer flight sessions.
  3. Buy a drone with a longer flight time.
  4. Take care of your propellers.
  5. Fly with the wind instead of against it.
  6. Minimize camera usage.
  7. Install a lighter weight camera.

The #1 thing to make your drone fly longer is to take proper care of your batteries. LiPo batteries can be especially sensitive, so proper storage and maintenance is important.

Extra batteries are your best friend. They will help extend your flight sessions. I often take at least three or four batteries with me. Make sure to buy the correct batteries for your model.

How Long Can A Drone Stay In The Air?

And what determines a drone's flight time?

A drone can stay in the air from 8 minutes all the way up to many days, weeks, or a whole year.

However, when it comes to consumer drones, most flight times are between 10 to 30 minutes.

Here are a few features that determine how long a drone can stay in the air:

  • The drone's weight
  • The power of the drone's motors
  • Wind and other weather conditions
  • The condition of the drone's battery
  • The size of the drone's propellers
  • The number of the drone's propellers (quadcopter, hexacopter, etc)
  • The drone pilot's flying style

Which Drone Has The Longest Flight Time?

The most popular consumer drone with the longest flight time is the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. It comes with a 31-minute flight time on a single charge.

When asking this question, however, it depends on the type of drone you are flying. A tethered drone can fly for ages. Same with a solar powered drone.

But when it comes to consumer drones, so far the industry hasn't advanced past the mid-30-minute flight times on most models.

What Is The Best Drone With The Longest Flight Time?

There we have it! These are some of the best drones with the longest flight time for sale in 2021.

The best long flight time consumer drone is the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. It comes with an almost unbeatable set of features that suit a wide range of pilots.
